Join us for a celebration of Anne Brontë, marking 175 years since she passed away

Hello everyone!

I am thrilled to announce some amazing events taking place to celebrate the life and talents of Anne Brontë, who died 175 years ago on the 28th May.

We are collaborating with Big Ideas By The Sea to put on two incredible events at St. Mary’s Church Scarborough on 28th May.

All About Anne!

The first event is All About Anne! Starting at 2pm, this event showcases how much Anne has inspired, and continues to inspire people in the arts. There will be original poetry performed by Charlotte Oliver and Emma Conally Barklem, and Scarborough born playwright, Wendy Pratt, will have a special performance of To be Undone: The Last Days of Anne Brontë. There is an opportunity to meet the writers, and even a book signing!

Memorial Service: Remembering Anne Brontë

The event taking place at 4pm is going to take place as a memorial service for Anne Brontë. When Anne died, her funeral could not be held at St. Mary’s as it was undergoing building work, so although she is buried in the churchyard, the funeral took place at Christ Church. The Anne Brontë Association wanted to give Anne the memorial service she wanted in St. Mary’s, and that is exactly what we are going to do!

With Rev. Arleen Ingham residing, and special guests, we will be having this memorial service to celebrate the life and talents of Anne. We continue to promote and protect her legacy in Scarborough.

We also have a special bell ringing performance! There will also be time to reflect, with a special blessing at Anne’s grave.
